Convert between bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and binary units KiB, MiB, GiB instantly.

What Is a Byte Converter?
A Byte Converter instantly converts a storage size between all common byte units — bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes — in both the decimal (SI) and binary (IEC) systems. Enter any value, pick a unit, and all equivalent values update in real time. This is useful when comparing file sizes, planning storage capacity, reading API documentation, or understanding why your operating system reports a different size than the drive manufacturer advertises.
How to Use Byte Converter
- Enter a number in the Value field.
- Select the source unit from the Unit dropdown (e.g. GB).
- All equivalent values in decimal and binary units appear instantly below.
- The source unit is highlighted in blue for easy reference.
Decimal vs Binary Units
- Decimal (SI) — KB = 10³, MB = 10⁶, GB = 10⁹, TB = 10¹², PB = 10¹⁵. Used by storage manufacturers, network speeds, and most consumer software.
- Binary (IEC) — KiB = 2¹⁰, MiB = 2²⁰, GiB = 2³⁰, TiB = 2⁴⁰, PiB = 2⁵⁰. Used by operating systems (Linux, macOS, Windows) when reporting RAM and file sizes.
FAQ
What is the difference between MB and MiB?
MB (megabyte) is a decimal unit equal to 1,000,000 bytes (10⁶), used by storage manufacturers and network speeds. MiB (mebibyte) is a binary unit equal to 1,048,576 bytes (2²⁰), used by operating systems when reporting file sizes and RAM.
How many bytes are in a gigabyte?
A gigabyte (GB) equals 1,000,000,000 bytes (10⁹) in the decimal SI system. A gibibyte (GiB) equals 1,073,741,824 bytes (2³⁰) in the binary IEC system. Hard drive manufacturers use GB, while Windows reports disk sizes in GiB.
Why does my 1 TB hard drive show less space in Windows?
Hard drive manufacturers measure 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (decimal). Windows displays storage in GiB (binary), so 1 TB ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 931 GiB. The drive has the advertised capacity — it is just displayed in a different unit.
What units does this converter support?
This converter supports all common byte units: B, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB (decimal/SI) and KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB (binary/IEC).
